Roster Management for Youth Baseball & Softball
Baseball roster management in Rizzler means one place for everything you know about your team: names, jersey numbers, positions, batting and throwing hands, parent contacts, availability, and medical notes. It matters more than it sounds like it should, because every other feature in the app reads from the roster. The lineup builder pulls positions from it, availability feeds your game plan, and every stat you record attaches to a profile you set up once.

How Roster Management Works
You enter each player once, and every game plan, batting order, depth chart, and stat record for the season pulls from that profile. Setup takes about five minutes for a typical 12 to 14 player team.
For each player you add a name, jersey number, primary position, secondary positions, and whether they bat and throw left or right. That short list is the working foundation. From there you can layer in parent emails and phone numbers, availability for each game and practice, and medical or allergy notes that matter when you're three towns from home on a tournament Sunday.
Assistant coaches see the same roster you do. When your assistant updates a kid's secondary position after Tuesday's practice, it's updated for everyone, and the next game plan either of you builds reflects it.
What a Set-Up Roster Looks Like
A finished roster is a working document, not a contact list. Here's a typical 12U roster the week of a Saturday league game, with availability already collected for that game:
| # | Player | Positions | Bats/Throws | Sat vs Fairview | Coach note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | M. Alvarez | SS / 2B | R/R | Yes | Leadoff candidate, best hands on the team |
| 5 | T. Nguyen | C / 3B | R/R | Yes | Strong arm, working on blocking in the dirt |
| 7 | J. Ortiz | P / 1B | L/L | Yes | Saturday starter, cap him near 60 pitches |
| 9 | D. Kim | P / OF | R/R | Yes | Threw 48 Tuesday, rest days observed by Saturday |
| 3 | R. Patel | 2B / OF | R/R | Yes | Contact bat, struggles vs faster arms |
| 14 | A. Brooks | CF / P | L/R | Yes | Fastest runner, green light on the bases |
| 8 | S. Castellanos | 3B / 1B | R/R | No | Sprained ankle, re-check next week |
| 11 | C. Whitfield | 1B / P | L/L | Maybe | Family event, confirming by Thursday |
| 22 | E. Martin | OF | R/R | Yes | New this season, still finding a spot |
| 4 | L. Freeman | OF / 2B | L/R | Yes | Sneaky pop, hides in the 7 hole |
| 10 | K. Okafor | C / OF | R/R | Yes | Second catcher, keeps Nguyen's legs fresh |
| 6 | B. Sullivan | OF | R/R | Maybe | Shares weekends between two households |
| 17 | G. Ramirez | P / 3B | R/R | Yes | Second arm Saturday if Ortiz hits his cap |
Read down the availability column and Saturday's problems announce themselves by Wednesday: Castellanos is out, two players are Maybe, and if Whitfield can't make it you have exactly one true first baseman. That's the point of doing this in an app instead of your head. You find the hole three days early, while there's still time to get Freeman reps at second and move Patel to first in practice.
What Goes in a Player Profile
The profile fields aren't decoration. Each one feeds a decision you'll make later in the season:
- Positions, primary and secondary. These drive the depth chart and fielding rotations. A kid listed only at shortstop is invisible when you need an emergency second baseman.
- Bats and throws. Handedness shapes the batting order and tells you who can physically play where. Your L/L kids are pitcher, first base, and outfield candidates; don't pencil them in at catcher or short.
- Parent contacts. Stored on the roster and readable from your phone, which is exactly where you want them when a game runs long and a parent is late for pickup.
- Medical and allergy notes. The information you hope you never need, kept where any coach on staff can find it in ten seconds.
- Availability, game by game. Covered below, because it deserves its own section.
None of it is required beyond name and number. Plenty of coaches start with the basics at the first practice and fill in the rest over two weeks as they learn the team.
Availability Without the Group-Text Chase
Availability and RSVP are included free on every Rizzler plan. Parents and players mark Yes, No, or Maybe for each game and practice through the parent and player apps, and older players can respond for themselves, which removes one relay from every question you ask.
That replaces the usual routine: post in the group chat Monday, get six replies, chase the other seven Thursday, find out about the eighth in the parking lot. In Rizzler you glance at the roster and see who has answered and who hasn't.
On the Pro and Club plans, availability syncs in real time, so a response shows up the moment a parent taps it, with no refresh. Pro and Club also send email and SMS notifications when you request RSVPs or change an event, so the ask lands in front of families instead of waiting for them to open an app.
Roster Management for Little League Coaches
The draft just happened and you've got 13 kids, half of whom you've never coached. Enter them into Rizzler that night, pull in what you know from evaluation day scores, and you have a working roster before the first practice.
The early-season roster is mostly guesses, and that's fine. You listed a kid at third because his dad said he played there last year; two practices later you learn his arm actually profiles in right field. Update the profile and move on. By week four the roster reflects your team as it actually is, and every lineup you build from it gets easier.
Roster Management for Travel Coaches
You carry 14 players across a 50-game season, and on any given weekend two of them are questionable. Availability tracking is what makes that survivable. When a family marks No for the Saturday of a tournament, your tournament plan is built around 13 players from the start, and the AI batting order on Pro and Club won't slot an unavailable player into the lineup.
Multi-team coaches get one more thing: each roster stays its own roster. Coaching the 11U and 13U teams in the same club means two clean rosters under one login, not one spreadsheet with a color-coding system only you understand.
