Average Baseball Stats by Age
A good batting average for most youth players falls between roughly .230 and .350, depending on age and competition level: around .250-.350 is typical for a 10 year old in rec ball, and .230-.320 is typical for a 12 year old, with travel ball ranges running lower. This page collects the ranges coaches commonly report and target for the most common baseball stats at each youth age group, so you know what "average," "above average," and "exceptional" tend to look like for your players.
Important context: No youth baseball organization publishes official league-wide stat averages. Every table on this page reflects coaching consensus: typical ranges coaches report from competitive youth baseball, offered as targets rather than measured league data. Rec leagues and travel ball vary significantly, and your league's level matters. A .350 batting average might be typical at 10U rec and exceptional at 12U travel. Use these as directional guides, not absolutes.

How to Use These Benchmarks
Don't compare players to each other using these tables. Use them to understand where your team sits relative to common coaching targets for the age. If your entire team's OBP is below .300, plate discipline needs work in practice. If your pitchers are all below 50% strike percentage, command is the priority.
Look at trends, not snapshots. A player who improved from .260 AVG to .310 AVG over a season had a great year, even if .310 is "average" on this chart. Development trajectory matters more than current standing.
Adjust for competition level. Travel ball stats will be lower than rec ball stats at the same age because the pitching and defense are better. A .280 AVG in 12U travel might be more impressive than a .380 in 12U rec.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good batting average for a 12 year old?
For a 12 year old in rec ball (12U), .230-.320 is average, .320-.400 is above average, and .400+ is exceptional. In 12U travel ball, where pitching and defense are stronger, .220-.300 is average and anything above .300 is above average. These are typical ranges coaches report, not published league data.
What is a good batting average for a 10 year old?
For a 10 year old in rec ball (10U), .250-.350 is average, .350-.450 is above average, and .450+ is exceptional. In 10U travel ball, .230-.320 is average and .320+ is above average. Contact quality matters more than the number at this age.
What is a good batting average for an 11 year old?
Most 11 year olds play 10U, 11U, or 12U depending on the league, so a good average sits between the 10U and 12U ranges: roughly .230-.350 is average in rec ball, with .350+ above average. Use the 10U row for younger-leaning leagues and the 12U row for competitive 11U/12U play.
What is a good strike percentage for 12U baseball?
For 12U pitchers, 57-63% strikes is solid and 63%+ is strong. Between 50-57% is still developing, and below 50% usually means too many walks for the team to compete. Strike percentage is the most important development stat for pitchers at this age.
Why are batting averages lower at older ages?
Because pitching gets better faster than hitting at the youth level. As kids age up, the pitching speed increases, pitch selection improves, and the strike zone becomes harder to cover. Lower batting averages at 14U don't mean the hitters are worse; they're facing better competition.
Should I share these benchmarks with my players?
At 12U+, sharing targets can be motivating if framed correctly: "Here's what solid looks like for your age. Let's work toward it." Don't use benchmarks to rank players or create anxiety. Using stats without overcoaching
Where do these numbers come from?
They're coaching consensus figures: ranges compiled from coaching experience, team scorebooks, and publicly available tournament results, reflecting what youth coaches commonly report and target. They are not published league data, because no youth organization publishes official stat averages. Your specific league and region may differ, so treat them as directional.
