Run Tryouts That Are Fair, Fast, and Professional
Rizzler helps travel and select baseball clubs run organized, fair tryouts: custom scoring rubrics, multiple coaches scoring simultaneously on their phones with results averaged automatically, side-by-side player comparisons, and clean data for roster decisions. Tryouts are the first impression your club makes on prospective families. Make it a good one.

Why Tryout Process Matters
Every fall, your club runs tryouts. 60 to 120 kids show up across age groups. Your coaches rotate through stations: hitting, fielding, throwing, speed, pitching. They watch players they know and players they've never seen. At the end of the weekend, they sit in a room and try to build rosters.
Here's where most clubs fall apart:
Inconsistent scoring. Coach A rates on a 1-5 scale and is generous. Coach B uses the same scale and is harsh. Coach C forgot to score half the kids at his station. The data is useless.
Recency bias. The kid who hit a bomb in the last round of BP gets remembered. The kid who made a great play at shortstop in the first rotation doesn't.
Gut-feel roster decisions. Without reliable data, coaches argue based on memory and preference. The kid whose dad is on the board gets the benefit of the doubt. Families notice.
Slow, messy communication. Results go out via email, sometimes weeks later, sometimes with mistakes. Families get frustrated. Some don't come back next year.
Rizzler fixes all of this. Not with a magic algorithm, but with a structured process that collects reliable data, reduces bias, and gives your coaches the information they need to make defensible roster decisions.
How Tryouts Work in Rizzler
-
Create the tryout event. Set the date, age groups, and stations. Choose or customize your scoring rubric: skills, scales, weights. Every evaluator will use the same rubric.
-
Register players. Add tryout attendees in bulk. Include any known information, like what team they were on last year or relevant notes from coaches. On tryout day, check players in as they arrive.
-
Assign evaluators. Invite coaches to the tryout event in Rizzler. Each coach sees the event on their phone with the player list and rubric.
-
Evaluate. At each station, coaches tap scores on their phone for each player. No paper. No clipboards. Scores sync immediately.
-
Multi-evaluator scoring. Have 2-3 coaches score the same players at the same station. Rizzler averages the scores, reducing the impact of any single evaluator's bias or inconsistency.
-
Review the data. After tryouts, review every player's evaluation scores in Rizzler, averaged across evaluators and organized by station and age group. Compare returning players against new prospects side by side.
-
Make roster decisions. Use the data to inform, not dictate, your roster decisions. When two players are close, pull up their detailed evaluations and compare them skill by skill.
-
Communicate results. Use Rizzler's data to provide specific, professional feedback to families. Instead of "we went another direction," you can share where a player excelled and where they can improve.

Reducing Bias in Tryouts
This matters more than most clubs acknowledge. When a coach evaluates a player they've coached before, they carry expectations, good and bad. When evaluators talk to each other during tryouts ("that kid looks solid"), they anchor each other's scores.
Rizzler helps reduce bias in three ways:
Averaged multi-evaluator scoring. Each evaluator scores on their own phone, and Rizzler averages the results, so no single scorer's tendencies dominate. Many clubs go further by having players wear numbered bibs and scoring by number, a simple process that keeps names and reputations out of the results.
Standardized rubrics. Every evaluator uses the same scale and criteria. Coach A's "4" means the same thing as Coach B's "4" because the rubric defines what each score means.
Data over memory. Roster decisions happen with comparable data in front of you, not around a table where the loudest voice wins.
Returning Players + New Prospects
Most travel team tryouts include both returning players re-trying out and new players trying to earn a spot. Rizzler handles this naturally:
- Tag players as "returning" or "new" in the tryout event
- Compare returning players' tryout scores to their current season evaluation data for a complete picture
- Use survey data from returning players and parents to factor in off-field considerations (commitment, coachability, goals)
Frequently Asked Questions
Can we customize the scoring rubric?
Yes. You can use Rizzler's pre-built tryout rubric or create a fully custom one with your own skills, scales, and weighting. Most clubs evaluate hitting, fielding, throwing, speed, arm strength, and baseball IQ, but you can add or remove categories.
Can we run tryouts for multiple age groups on the same day?
Yes. Create one tryout event with multiple age groups. Players are organized by division, and evaluators can filter by age group at their station.
How do we handle a large tryout with 100+ kids?
Station-based evaluation. Assign coaches to specific stations and age groups. Each coach evaluates the players who rotate through their station. Rizzler handles the aggregation. You just need to keep the stations moving.
What if some coaches can only evaluate certain age groups?
Coaches can be assigned to specific age groups within the tryout event. They'll only see players in their assigned groups.
Is tryout management available on the Pro plan?
No. The Tryouts feature is available on the Club plan ($79/mo) only. Plan comparison →
